Read beyond your preferred view
The Army's Main Board guidance includes a written current-affairs essay, and its general advice encourages awareness of society and defence issues. The exact question cannot be assumed in advance. Choose a topic with genuine disagreement and read an authoritative explanation of what happened before moving to commentary. Try to identify the strongest reasonable argument against your own initial view.
State a proposition you can defend
A strong short essay tells the reader what it will argue. That does not require false certainty. Consider a fictional policy debate about funding local transport versus community sports provision. Identify the decision, explain who is affected, use relevant evidence and be explicit where you have made an assumption. An essay that simply lists considerations can leave the assessor uncertain of your judgement.
Build paragraphs around decisions
Use each paragraph to advance one part of the reasoning: the competing objectives, evidence, consequences or limits. Notice where you have repeated a point using different words. The ability to write plainly is part of the exercise; elaborate vocabulary is not a substitute for explaining why one option is preferable.
Distinguish reporting from persuasion
News reports, institutional data and opinion columns do different jobs. Check publication dates and, where possible, a primary source before repeating a statistic. If the evidence is uncertain, say what additional fact would change your conclusion. Making uncertainty visible is stronger than inventing precision.
Practise without collecting secret questions
Use published current affairs and original civilian prompts. The Army publishes the structure of its assessment; it does not authorise private providers to supply privileged live questions or scores. Treat the final essay as an opportunity to show independent thinking.
Try this independently
Pick one current topic and write a 250-word argument in your own voice: claim, best counterargument, trade-off and provisional decision. Wait an hour, then remove every sentence that does not alter the argument.
