Graduate leadership decision labs for employers

A proposed civilian learning format for employers whose graduate cohorts need to weigh options, disagree constructively and explain their decisions.

Why a fictional decision works

An early-career employee rarely gets to rehearse a consequential decision without real-world costs. A carefully designed fictional brief offers that space: limited facts, conflicting incentives and more than one defensible solution. The objective is not to imitate an AOSB planning exercise but to observe whether the team can explain what it considered.

A session built around evidence

A sensible pilot could begin with a written decision memo, continue into a small-group discussion and finish with an evidence-led debrief. Participants would identify the aim, constraints, credible alternatives and what additional information could change their minds. These are civilian professional-development activities and would need a facilitator competent in group learning.

What the sponsor should expect

The employer should define which workplace behaviour matters. Is it clearer escalation, more inclusive meetings or stronger written recommendations? A useful deliverable is an agreed rubric of observable behaviours and examples from the fictional scenario, not a promise to discover who would pass Army selection.

Inclusion and psychological safety

High-pressure theatre can reward the most extroverted voice while overlooking thoughtful analysis. A pilot should offer multiple ways to contribute, appropriate breaks and no deliberate humiliation. Participants should know what will be observed and how feedback will be used before the exercise begins.

From pilot to programme

Before any sale, verify the facilitator, safeguarding where relevant, data handling, insurance, contract and scope. A trial could test whether the exercise generates a useful learning conversation. The site does not advertise a bookable course or an established outcome.

A sensible pilot brief

Ask the sponsor to choose one real problem—for example, delayed escalation in graduate projects. Build a fictional scenario that makes that choice unavoidable, then agree how learning will be reviewed one month later.
