Understand the published format
The Army's Main Board outline includes a five-minute lecturette followed by questions from the group. That is enough to practise the communication skill without claiming to know your future topic. A good short talk usually makes one clear claim and develops it with a small number of supporting ideas.
Organise a beginning, middle and decision
A useful civilian exercise is to explain a choice someone might plausibly face, such as whether a university society should launch a new programme. Explain the problem, identify the criteria and end with the decision you would recommend. If your opening takes half the available time, the audience may not hear your reasoning.
Rehearse for comprehension, not memorisation
A fully scripted performance can sound assured at first and unravel when you lose a line. Speak from a concise set of prompts; record yourself once to notice unclear transitions and unnecessary words. If a listener cannot summarise your point afterwards, simplifying the message may do more than adding another example.
Answer the question actually asked
Pause long enough to understand the question. Where the answer is unknown, acknowledge the gap and give the relevant reasoning rather than constructing a fictitious statistic. If you disagree, respond to the substance rather than the tone. The group needs clarity, not a demonstration of invulnerability.
Use feedback that can be observed
Ask a listener whether the structure was evident, which claim needed evidence and whether the answer changed when challenged. These are useful civilian communication observations, not official assessment marks.
Try this independently
Give a five-minute talk on a fictional club decision. Ask three people to write your recommendation on paper immediately afterwards. If all three remember different recommendations, edit the structure rather than the slides.
